A month is calculated as 4 weeks. Profit from 36 sales is ¥50,400. This excludes time for marketing and listing preparation, returns and additional expenses. To assess startup cost recovery and whether the goal is achievable by your deadline, check when sales can begin and how much you expect to sell.

A positive profit calculation does not mean the sales will happen. This example includes no external market data. Check likely sales volume and preparation time separately.

Check before you start. Review the contract terms if you encounter upfront payments, expensive courses, income guarantees or pressure to borrow. This notebook does not certify the safety of a side hustle.

Compare costs, marketing time and start dates

Results update when you change the inputs above. Fill in the missing details here to compare each option against your time, budget and deadline. Blank fields mean insufficient information. Enter “0” even if there are no fixed costs.

The ¥50,000 target is monthly profit before tax from pursuing each option on its own. Each estimate uses your available time over 4 weeks. It does not mean you can pursue all 3 options at once.

Online shop

Include inventory purchases, packaging and other startup costs. Check working capital needs separately. If the same expense appears in both startup costs and product costs, the recovery estimate conservatively deducts it twice.

Blog

Calculate the revenue rate as revenue ÷ views × 1,000. Performance-based earnings also depend on conversions. This tool does not predict views from working hours.

Rewards site

Calculations assume a starting balance of 0 points before redemption. Check each service’s redemption increments, expiry dates and approval requirements. Unapproved points do not count as cash income.

Update your ¥50,000 monthly plan with weekly results

Record revenue and expenses on a consistent basis. If you record cash received, exclude rewards awaiting approval from revenue. Weeks without a record are excluded from averages.

A record with the same start date and option replaces the existing record. New entries initially stay on this page. Use “Save assumptions and weekly records on this device” to load them next time.

Warning signs to check before signing a side hustle contract

Select any items that apply to include them in your comparison export. Leaving all items unchecked does not establish that an offer is safe.

Before deciding on an offer you have not checked, review the work involved, total payment and cancellation terms.

Keep the provider’s name, contract, payment destination and communication records. If you have concerns, check public advice services such as the National Consumer Affairs Center of Japan before paying.

Formulas and examples for a ¥50,000 monthly side hustle target

The following assumptions were created to explain the calculations. They are not evidence of typical rewards, user results or time to first earnings. Calculation specifications checked: October 18, 2026.

Online shop sales needed and profit

Profit per sale = selling price − product cost − shipping − selling price × fee rate. Required sales = (¥50,000 + monthly fixed costs) ÷ profit per sale, rounded up.

With a price of ¥3,000, product cost of ¥1,000, shipping of ¥300, a 10% fee and ¥0 fixed costs, profit per sale is ¥1,400. At 36 sales, profit is ¥50,400. At 60 minutes per sale, processing those sales takes 36 hours. Adding an assumed 8 hours a month for marketing and administration brings the total to 44 hours, exceeding the 40 hours available at 10 hours a week over 4 weeks.

Add returns, damage, packaging and bank transfer fees to the relevant expenses. This calculation cannot tell you whether there is enough demand to achieve the required sales.

Blog views needed and revenue rate

Monthly profit = monthly views ÷ 1,000 × revenue per 1,000 views − monthly fixed costs. Required views = (¥50,000 + monthly fixed costs) ÷ revenue per 1,000 views × 1,000, rounded up.

Assuming ¥200 per 1,000 views and ¥1,000 in fixed costs, you would need 255,000 monthly views. The ¥200 figure is an illustration and does not represent any advertising service’s revenue rate. More writing time does not necessarily lead to a proportional increase in views.

If you do not yet know your revenue rate, leave it blank. Start by writing 1 article without spending money and measuring how long it takes.

Rewards site task limits and cash-out requirements

Profit per task = reward points × cash value per point − out-of-pocket cost. The required task count includes the fee for redeeming once a month and is rounded up. It is then compared with the task count needed to reach the minimum redemption threshold, and the higher count is used.

At 500 points per task, ¥1 per point, ¥0 out-of-pocket cost and ¥0 redemption fees, you would need 100 tasks for ¥50,000 a month. If the monthly limit is 20 tasks, the maximum profit is ¥10,000, so the target cannot be reached on those terms. Do not treat first-time-only rewards as recurring monthly revenue.

Even after reaching the minimum redemption amount, pending approvals, redemption increments or the destination’s requirements may prevent you from receiving the full amount that month. “Profit” on this page does not mean redemption has been completed.

Startup costs, deadlines and profit before tax

Profit in the target month assumes that the sales, views or task limit you entered stays constant each month after earnings begin. If the months until earnings begin equal or exceed your target period, there are 0 earning months before the deadline.

Cumulative balance by the deadline = the greater of (target months − months until earnings begin) and 0 × monthly profit − startup costs. Fixed costs before earnings begin are excluded. Simple startup cost recovery time = startup costs ÷ monthly profit, rounded up to whole months. Recovering startup costs and sustaining ¥50,000 in monthly profit are separate conditions.

Tax, social insurance contributions and pay for your own work are not deducted. Check filing requirements and your employer’s rules for your situation. This tool does not determine whether you must file a tax return or calculate take-home income.
