02 — KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BEFORE YOU ROTATE

Different kinds of rotation
need different steps.

Knowing whether you are changing the view or saving a change to the file makes it easier to choose your next step.

PDFs: Viewing and saving are different

Rotating the view temporarily makes a PDF easier to read. Rotating pages so they keep their orientation when reopened is a separate action. Saving may require editing features or permissions.

Word: Start with what you have selected

Images, text boxes, and pages use different controls. Regular body text cannot be freely rotated, so we also explain how to move text into a text box.

Screens: Check rotation lock and app support

If tilting your device does not rotate the screen, check rotation lock and whether the app supports it. We provide separate steps for Windows display settings and iPhone.

03 — HOW TO USE

Your next action in 3 steps.

Keep just the instructions you need, so you do not have to search again while you work.

01

Choose what to rotate

Do you only need to rotate the PDF view, or save it too? In Word, is it an image or text? Start with your goal.

02

Check the steps for your setup

Select your device, OS, and app. Read the instructions, feature limitations, and checks for when something does not work.

03

Keep the instructions handy

Download an instruction card and open it in your browser. Print it for a paper reference, or share a URL with your selected settings to help a colleague.

Free. No signup. Data is processed on your device. If you have not made a selection, the card uses the default settings.

04 — FAQ

Before you get started.

My PDF goes back to its original orientation when I reopen it.

You may have rotated only the view. To keep the orientation in the file, you need to rotate the pages using an editing feature and save the PDF. Select “PDF: Rotate and save,” then check your app’s editing features and the document permissions.

Can I tilt regular body text in Word?

Regular paragraphs do not have a free rotation handle like images do. In desktop Word, you can put text inside a text box and rotate the box. If you only want a landscape page, use “Orientation” on the “Layout” tab.

Ctrl + Alt + an arrow key does not rotate my screen.

This shortcut is not available on every Windows setup. It depends on your graphics features and settings. This guide explains how to change orientation through Windows display settings.

Is it free? Do I need to upload a file or provide an email address?

Using this guide and exporting instruction cards is free, with no signup or file uploads required. Some features in the apps mentioned may require payment. We do not offer email update notifications. You can check changes in the update history on this page.

How is saving in the browser different from downloading?

Saving in the browser lets you recall your selected settings on this device in this browser. Downloading an instruction card saves an HTML file containing the steps, notes, and sources. If browser storage is restricted, use an instruction card instead.

Do the listed versions and review dates mean these steps were tested on a device?

“Documentation coverage” identifies the products and versions covered by the official documentation. “Documentation reviewed” is the date those sources were consulted. Neither indicates device testing of a specific build. If your interface or subscription terms differ, also check the official sources linked in the results.
